Car accidents: Drag-racing, alcohol alleged causes of fatal crash

A 39-year-old Brooklyn man lost his life in a rear-end crash in the early morning hours of a recent Sunday in late October. Naturally, family members of those who are killed in car accidents have many questions after such tragedies. This is also the case for the sister of the deceased man who was a passenger in the car operated by an alleged negligent driver.

What the New York Police Department suspect may be a drag-racing incident occurred on West Shore Expressway on Staten Island. An accident report indicates that a 38-year-old Brooklyn driver was northbound on the expressway when he rear-ended an SUV. Authorities say both these drivers were speeding at the time of the crash. The impact of the collision caused the SUV to smash into the rear of a van, sending it into the guardrail on the center median.

According to NYPD, two passengers and the driver of the van suffered non-critical injuries, and the driver of the rear-ended car was treated and released. That driver and the SUV driver are both facing drunk driving charges. The 39-year-old male passenger in the SUV was killed in this crash. His sister said her two daughters were passengers in the back seat of the SUV, and police reported that they were hospitalized with injuries that were non-life threatening.

Drivers are always responsible for the safety of their passengers, and injured victims of car accidents can pursue recovery of damages by filing personal injury claims in civil court. The surviving family members of deceased victims may file wrongful death claims to recover financial and emotional damages. In a case such as this one in which negligence may be established on the part of both alleged drunk drivers, the lawsuits may be complicated and best navigated by experienced New York personal injury attorneys.
