Elderly individuals and indoor slip-and-fall accidents

As people get older, it is natural to lose strength and balance. As a result, older people are more likely to fall. These falls can cause serious or even catastrophic injuries.

Unfortunately, there are times when a slip and fall accident could have been prevented. This is typically the case when a property owner neglected to maintain one's property in the appropriate manner.

With older people, it may only take one mistake by a property owner to cause a serious accident. Here are some of the most common causes of these accidents, including information on why they happen:

  • Failure to provide warning that a floor is wet or being cleaned, such as with a polish or wax
  • Failing to use barriers to block off areas of floors that can pose a safety risk
  • Using too much polish or wax and/or doing so in an inconsistent manner
  • Neglecting to use floor treatments that are non-skid, thus increasing the likelihood of an accident
  • Torn carpeting
  • Mats or rugs with curled edges, causing a trip hazard that can be difficult to see

Along with the above, steps can be a dangerous place for any individual. This is particularly true of elderly people who need a stable and safe environment. Here are some common accidents associated with stairways:

  • Broken or missing handrails
  • Debris, such as newspaper or other forms of trash, which can act as a trip hazard
  • Stairs that have been polished or waxed
  • Missing stairs
  • Stairs that are cracked, sloping, or defective in some other way

Most property owners realize that they need to maintain both the interior and exterior of their property. However, there are always those that overlook their responsibilities. This doesn't guarantee that an accident will occur, but it definitely increases the likelihood.

If you or an elderly loved one is injured in a slip and fall accident, it's important to do three things:

  • Receive immediate medical attention
  • Make note of the cause of the accident
  • Learn more about your legal rights and if you can file a claim to receive compensation

By taking these steps, you can give yourself or someone you love the best chance to recover full compensation for their injuries.
