Was Bill Paxton’s death the result of medical malpractice?

On Behalf of | Feb 16, 2018 | Medical Malpractice

Bill Paxton had a very successful Hollywood career on both the big screen and television. His life came to an untimely end when he sought medical treatment for a heart condition. His family now believes that the surgeon who operated on him is guilty of medical malpractice, and they have filed lawsuits against the doctor and the facility of treatment. Those in New York who have also lost loved ones to potential medical negligence may be entitled to pursue the same legal actions.

At the age of 61, Mr. Paxton was diagnosed with an aortic aneurysm. There are two ways to treat this condition — waiting it out or surgical repair. His doctor allegedly told him that surgical repair was the right course of action and performed the procedure. At 11 days post-op, Bill suffered a stroke and died.

Mr. Paxton’s family just recently filed a wrongful death lawsuit against his physician and the hospital, claiming that the risks of surgery were not fully disclosed and that the surgeon lacked the required experience to perform the procedure. The surgeon has refused to comment on the case. The hospital will not comment on pending litigation other than to say that the health and safety of its patients is of the utmost importance. Only time will tell how this case turns out.

Medical malpractice claims are not easy to prove. These cases can take a while, which may seem frustrating to family members who desperately want closure. Those in New York who believe that their loved ones died as a result of medical negligence can turn to an experienced attorney who will be able to review the fact of their cases, seek medical expert insight, and — if deemed appropriate — pursue compensation through litigation or negotiation.
