No matter who you are, you deserve to have your health looked after if you’re involved in a car crash. Whether you’re a citizen or an immigrant, it’s your right to pursue a claim if you get hurt because of another person’s actions.

If you are involved in a car crash, there are some steps that you need to take to make sure your case is taken seriously and that you get as much compensation as possible. Here are four steps you should take right away.

1. Call 911

Even if the accident seems minor, it’s best to call 911. You are legally obligated to report the accident, so calling 911 allows you to do that by having the police come to the scene. You should also call 911 so that you can be taken to the hospital by ambulance and have a medical exam performed.

When you talk to the 911 operator, be cautious of what you say. Stick to the facts: the type of accident, where it occurred and how many people you believe are involved.

2. Exchange information

If you and others involved in the crash are able, it’s time to exchange insurance information. Get contact information from witnesses, too, if you can.

3. Go to the hospital

Once help arrives, it’s an important step to head to the hospital. You want to make sure that you get a full medical exam, so you can identify any injuries you’ve suffered and have a record that you were hurt enough that you thought it best to go to the hospital. This will help your insurance claim, because it shows that you did have injuries at the time of the collision. Sometimes, injuries are delayed, so go to the hospital as soon as you can to have a proper diagnosis made.

4. Talk to your attorney

Finally, talk to your attorney. Even if you’re still in the hospital, your attorney will begin taking steps to file your claim and help you get the compensation you need. There is a time limit on how long you have to file a claim, so let your attorney know that you were in an accident to start a claim right away.

These are four steps to take after a crash. Doing these things will help you make the most of your claim and get the compensation you deserve after you’re in a traffic collision.
