What is the mortality rate for construction workers?

On Behalf of | Sep 9, 2024 | Construction Accidents

In the construction industry, safety is a big concern because of the high risks involved. Understanding the death rate among these workers helps us see the dangers they deal with every day.

Understanding the statistics

In the construction industry, the likelihood of fatal accidents is notably higher compared to other professions. The demanding and hazardous nature of the work exposes construction workers to significant risks. In 2020, there were 976 people in this field who had a fatal accident while on the job.

Leading causes of fatalities

Several things lead to construction accidents and the high death rate among construction workers:

  • Falls from heights: This is the biggest cause of death, often because there isn’t enough fall protection.
  • Struck by objects: Tools or materials can cause deadly injuries if they hit workers.
  • Electrocutions: Coming into contact with live wires or broken equipment can be fatal.
  • Caught in/between incidents: Workers can get trapped by machines or collapsing structures.

The importance of safety measures

Many deaths on construction sites were avoidable if the company or person followed strict safety rules. Proper training and using personal protective equipment (PPE) are very important in safeguarding construction workers. Regular safety checks can find and fix problems before they cause accidents.

Improving safety on construction sites

To make construction sites safer, there are efforts to improve training programs and use new safety technology. Workers and employers need to work together to follow safety guidelines. By doing this, they can lower the risks and help save lives.
