Car accidents are often fatal for New York pedestrians

Walking can be a great form of exercise and sometimes it is a more efficient way to get from one point to another compared to driving a car. Those who choose to walk should not have to be afraid of crossing the street. However, the unfortunate reality is that many pedestrians are involved in car accidents on a regular basis. One man was recently struck and killed while crossing the street near a New York airport.

Police say the man was on his way to catch an early morning flight at the airport when the accident occurred. As he crossed the street, a driver headed westbound vehicle struck him. Authorities stated that the driver made no effort to stop and help the man after the collision, and instead fled the scene.

The driver believed to be responsible for the crash has yet to be found. Police are working to gather surveillance footage from surrounding businesses to further investigate. Authorities have not said what charges, if any, will be filed against the driver once he or she is apprehended.

In situations where a pedestrian is killed in such a way, the surviving family may be entitled to file a wrongful death claim in civil court against the party believed to be at fault. If negligence is proved, the family may then be awarded damages that could be used to pay for medical bills, funeral costs and any other related losses. Those who have lost loved ones in car accidents could speak to an experienced New York personal injury attorney to obtain more information.
