In the early morning hours of Saturday, Feb. 3, police and other rescue workers in New York were called to tend to a multi-vehicle crash. An impaired driver is believed responsible for the event that left one person dead and at least two others injured. When car accidents are DUI-related, victims — or in the event of fatality — their surviving family members may be entitled to seek compensation for their losses through legal means.
A 54-year-old male was allegedly speeding and impaired when he slammed into the back end of a sedan waiting at a stop sign at the corner of Bronx Park East and Burke Avenue. The force of impact launched the sedan through the intersection and into another car, and sent the SUV flying into a couple of parked cars. The driver of the sedan — a 31-year-old male — was killed in the wreck and his passenger suffered injuries. The driver of the car hit by the sedan — a 48-year-old female — was also hurt. Both of the injured victims were transported to a hospital for treatment.
The man deemed responsible for this incident was placed under arrest and transported to a medical facility for care. He is said to have seemed unaware of the gravity of the situation. Criminal charges have been filed against him. It is unknown if court dates have already been set to address the matter.
The deceased victim is said to leave behind an autistic son. The current conditions of the injured victims are unknown. Following car accidents like this, recovery for victims or their surviving family members can be excruciating. It may be possible for those negatively affected by this apparent drunk driver’s actions to seek some relief, however, by filing civil claims against him in a New York civil court. Those whose claims are successfully managed may achieve monetary compensation for any and all recoverable damages.
