Helping You Reclaim Your Power

What is defensive driving?

Even the best drivers can encounter carelessness from time to time, which can lead to an accident regardless of your abilities behind the wheel. However, adopting certain driving behaviors can greatly reduce your risk of collision.

Defensive driving practices help motorists avoid accidents and remain alert at all times. All drivers must adopt these practices to keep the roads and highways safe for themselves and others. Here are a few key points to keep in mind.

Put the phone away

It is hard to part ways with your phone for even a few minutes, but doing so is a must when driving. Even a few seconds of inattention can lead to a serious, life-changing accident when a person spends time texting, composing emails, or reading replies to social media posts. Keep your phone in an unreachable place when driving, and put it on silent to resist temptation.

Constantly scan your mirrors

Rear and side view mirrors serve a crucial purpose, so you should consistently check yours while you are behind the wheel. You must also take the time to check your blind spots, which are the area around your vehicle that you cannot see using the mirrors alone. This is especially important when changing lanes are turning, when it is most likely that another vehicle will make its way into your blind spot.

Keep distance between yourself and others

You generally want to leave at least three car lengths between your vehicles and others. This space allows you to stop effectively, should the vehicle in front of you do so suddenly. It also gives you time to react to unexpected occurrences, such as debris in the road.

When weather conditions are poor, feel free to increase the spacing to four or five car lengths. Slick roads and reduced visibility negatively impact your abilities and can lead to a serious accident.
