Evading police can cause dangerous car accidents in New York

Regardless of how careful a person is out on the road, it can be difficult to react to the decisions of a negligent driver. A momentary lack of judgment while driving can have catastrophic results. These types of car accidents have the potential to cause serious harm to anyone involved. A 16-year-old boy is facing DWI charges after a recent accident involving a police chase in New York.

Police say they attempted to pull the boy over for driving his SUV in the wrong lane. Reportedly, he decided to flee and, shortly thereafter, collided with another car. He was critically injured in the crash and airlifted to a local hospital. Although the injuries to the other driver were non-life threatening, they could have been avoided altogether had the boy chosen to obey the law.

When a driver chooses to evade police, he or she puts everyone nearby at risk. These choices often involve poor judgment and lack of concentration, which increases the potential for a collision to occur. If the situation involves someone who is driving while intoxicated, the consequences can be deadly. In this particular case, the young boy will likely be facing several charges in addition to DWI.

Suffering an injury in an accident can lead to many hardships. Medical costs can be extensive, and depending on the severity of the injury, a person could be forced to take time off of work. In many car accidents involving negligent drivers, victims seek restitution through the civil court system. When facing a similar situation, many people in New York speak with an attorney for advice on how to proceed with a personal injury claim.
