In spite of the many safety precautions in place, construction work in New York has always been a dangerous job. Whether the result of a fall, malfunctioning equipment or any other host of workplace hazards, construction accidents can result in serious injuries. One worker was recently injured when he was pinned under a giant hammer.
The accident occurred when workers attempted to move a hammer weighing several tons. The hammer fell as it was being carried by a crane and pinned the man to the ground. Luckily for the victim, the hammer caught on some steel sheeting as it fell, which prevented it from crushing him to death. Rescuers had to secure the hammer with ropes and dig underneath the victim before they could finally free him.
Though he escaped death, the man was still seriously hurt in the accident. Both of his legs were severely injured and medics were called in to provide him with an IV and pain medication until the fire department could free him. He was then taken to a local hospital in serious condition.
In situations like this, workers must deal with not only the injuries they suffer, but the financial burden of lost wages. Those facing these issues can file for workers’ compensation to potentially receive monetary damages to help pay for medical bills and any other expenses related to the accident. Any New York employees hurt in construction accidents have the right to file claims. Experienced workers’ compensation attorneys could provide more information and help clients throughout the filing process.
