Infections are not an uncommon occurrence. Even with proper care and hygiene, a small cut can become infected.
Ear and sinus infections are examples of ones many people get. However, even the most minor infection can become serious and lead to deadly consequences if not identified early enough.
Delayed treatment
One consequence of an infection misdiagnosis is the delay in appropriate treatment. The prescribed treatment may not target the actual cause of the symptoms when there is a misidentified or missed infection. This delay allows the infection to progress, potentially leading to more severe symptoms and complications such as sepsis. An untreated infection may eventually spread and damage other parts of the body, including organs, some irreversible, or even result in death.
Emotional toll
Living with an undiagnosed or misdiagnosed infection can take a toll on an individual’s physical and emotional well-being. Persistent symptoms, coupled with the frustration of not receiving proper treatment, can lead to a decline in overall health. The uncertainty surrounding the correct diagnosis can cause emotional distress and anxiety.
USA Today reports that, according to researchers, misdiagnoses result in almost and over 400,000 deaths and permanent disabilities respectively annually. All misdiagnoses are dangerous. When a healthcare provider fails to properly diagnose an infection, patients may suffer serious effects. Their condition may worsen, leading to a worsening mental condition. Individuals with misdiagnosed ear infections may lose their hearing. Infections may spread out from the point of injury to the brain, heart or other organs, harming them. Individuals may even lose their lives to sepsis. When an infection misdiagnosis causes harm to an individual, he or she may be able to obtain compensation for their suffering and losses.
