On Behalf of | Apr 4, 2024 | Car Accidents

You may drive several times a day to get to work, run errands and get where you need to know. When you leave your house, you likely do not anticipate getting into a collision with another driver.

Experiencing a car accident can be a stressful and overwhelming situation. Knowing what steps to take afterward can help ensure your safety and protect your interests.

Ensure safety

The first priority after a car accident is to ensure the safety of yourself, your passengers and others involved. If possible, move your vehicle to a safe location away from traffic to prevent further accidents or injuries. Turn on hazard lights to alert other drivers of the accident scene.

Check for injuries

Check yourself, your passengers and anyone else involved in the accident for injuries. If anyone has injuries, call emergency services immediately for medical assistance. Even if injuries seem minor, seek medical attention promptly.

Call the police

Contact the police to report the accident, especially if there are injuries, significant property damage or disputes over fault. A police report provides an official record of the accident and can be valuable for insurance purposes and potential legal proceedings.

Exchange information

Exchange contact and insurance information with the other parties involved in the accident. Obtain names, addresses, phone numbers, driver’s license numbers, license plate numbers and insurance policy details.

Document the scene

Document the accident scene by taking photos or videos of the vehicles involved, the surrounding area and any visible damage or injuries. This documentation can serve as evidence for insurance claims and investigations.

Notify your insurance company

Report the accident to your insurance company as soon as possible. Provide them with accurate and detailed information about the accident. Include the date, time, location and a description of what happened.

Following the car accident, focus on recovering emotionally and physically. It can take time to make a full recovery, so be patient with yourself at this time.
